10-Year-Old Girl Killed When Child Playing With Gun Accidentally Fires

On March 10, 2026 at 4:15 p.m., emergency responders were called to the parking lot area near a Sonic restaurant on Government Street in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after reports of a child being shot. Authorities said the shooting occurred while several people were gathered near a vehicle outside the restaurant.

The victim was identified as 10-year-old Kimani Thomas.

According to investigators, an 8-year-old child inside the vehicle began handling a firearm and accidentally discharged the weapon. At the time the gun fired, Kimani was standing outside the vehicle when she was struck by the bullet.

Family members told reporters that Kimani’s mother and stepfather both worked at the Sonic restaurant where the shooting occurred. Authorities said the incident happened as the stepfather was arriving for work and the mother was leaving her shift.

Emergency responders transported Kimani to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Investigators said the case remains under investigation as authorities determine how the firearm was accessed by the child and who the weapon belonged to.
