Police said the shooting Tuesday happened around 1 p.m. at Washington National Cemetery in the 4100 block of Suitland Road.
During a news conference Tuesday, Prince George’s County Police Department Major David Blazer said when officers arrived at the scene, they found a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to a local hospital where she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Blazer said the shooting victims were in a dispute “not directly related to the funeral.” One person is in police custody.
“We believe that this was a dispute totally unrelated to what was going on with the funeral, the circumstances leading up to the funeral, the circumstances into the investigation in Washington, D.C. This was totally independent of that,” Blazer said.
Authorities are talking to witnesses and family members who attended the funeral to learn more about what happened.
