The immigration agent accused of killing a mother of three in Minneapolis has been named, as President Trump scaled up the federal response to protests in the city.
The agent caught on video shooting dead Renee Nicole Good was identified by local media as Jonathan Ross, 43. He is listed as having previously lived near the US army base Fort Bliss in New Mexico.
According to court documents from an unrelated case, Ross was injured in a traffic incident while arresting an undocumented man who dragged Ross with his car.
Ross’s name emerged as The New York Times reported the Trump administration was sending 100 additional Customs and Border Protection agents to Minnesota after Good’s death caused anger over the government’s raids across the city.
JD Vance, the vice-president, addressing reporters in a White House press conference, said on Thursday that he stood by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and that the administration would not give in to left-wing “terrorism”.
“No one wants to see an American killed,” Vance said of Good’s death. “It’s absolutely a tragedy [and] it’s the making of the far left. It was a tragedy of her own making.”
Vance accused Democrats of rallying “mobs” against law enforcement officers in their opposition to the Trump administration’s anti-immigration push. “It means we’re going to get tougher,” he said. “We won’t give into terrorism.”
