Polish president vetoes media ownership bill critics say aimed at silencing US-owned channel

Andrzej Duda has cut down a controversial media bill over free speech concerns, likely to strain relations with key ally the US.

If the legislation had passed, it would have tightened rules around foreign ownership of media, affecting the US-owned news channel TVN24’s ability to operate.

“I believe that generally limiting the possibility of holding shares or stocks in media companies is sensible when it comes to foreign capital…” Duda said.
