An armed individual in a boat opened fire at the American Fish Company restaurant in Southport, North Carolina, on Saturday, September 27, 2025, killing three people and injuring at least eight others. A suspect was later detained and is in police custody.

The mass shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the American Fish Company, a waterfront bar and restaurant located in the Southport Yacht Basin at the mouth of the Cape Fear River.

A single occupant of a boat pulled up to the venue and began shooting at dinner patrons. Three people were killed, and at least eight were injured, with two airlifted for emergency treatment. Southport Police Chief Todd Coring confirmed on September 28 that six of the injured were receiving hospital treatment.

Around 10 p.m., about 30 minutes after the shooting, the U.S. Coast Guard located an individual matching the suspect’s description at a public boat ramp in Oak Island. That person, identified as 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge, was detained and later charged with three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of common law-attempted first-degree murder.

  • Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Southport Police Department, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
  • Public safety: Authorities have stated there is no further credible threat to the public.
