Large numbers of public transit riders were stranded Thursday morning after BART officials were forced to stop service between the West Oakland and 24th Street Mission BART stations due to an equipment problem.

BART service in the Transbay Tube between San Francisco and Oakland was shut down for more than two hours Sunday night, due to what the transit agency said was a loss of communications.

BART gave no estimated time for reopening. The transit agency announced the closure on social media at 4:19 p.m. and it directed affected riders to use bus service with AC Transit, which they could do for free during the closure.

Riders in San Francisco could board buses at the Salesforce Transit Center, using lines F, O an N/L. Riders in the East Bay could use the O, N/L and F bus lines
