On September 17, 2025 after 10 a.m., police say officers responded to an apartment in Leesburg, Virginia for a report of an infant not breathing. Upon arrival, they found an infant unresponsive with charging cord around her neck. The infant was immediately taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.
Further investigation revealed that the infant had been a victim of an assault.
Allegedly, he contacted a friend for a ride and apparently told the friend he was “playing with his sister and may have killed her.”
Police said the suspect left the home on foot before officers arrived, but with the assistance of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, he was apprehended.
At 3:18 p.m., 21-year-old Alvaro Mejia Ayala was found at approximately in the area of the 100 block of Meadows Lane, NE. He was arrested and charged with strangulation.
On September 23, the 8-month-old girl died of her injuries.
Mejia Ayala is still in custody, being held without bond. Officials said he will soon be charged with his sister’s murder.
