82-year-old Harriet Kay Recker arrested for murder and possession of a weapon

On September 12, 2025 around 10:30 a.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a report of shots fired at the Preston Health Center at the Cypress of Hilton Head, located at 87 Birdsong Way in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Upon arrival, deputies responded to a patient’s room, where they located a woman, alongside of her 81-year-old husband who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will release additional information regarding the victim pending notification of next of kin.
The suspect was identified as 82-year-old Harriet Kay Recker.
Chrissy Kristian, a community manager at Hilton Head Plantation, wrote in a message to residents that the suspect had shot her husband in the torso, and the man died as medics attempted to treat him on scene. The couple had “recently arrived” at the facility at the time of the shooting, she added.
Recker is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. She was booked into the Beaufort County Jail with no bond set in her case, as she awaits her first appearance with a judge.
Deputies say the investigation remains ongoing. They did not specify any potential motive in the shooting.
