A gas tanker truck explosion on a highway in Mexico City’s Iztapalapa borough injured at least 57 people on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. The vehicle overturned near the Puente de la Concordia area, triggering a massive fire that also burned 18 other vehicles.

  • Casualties: Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada confirmed that 57 people were injured, with 19 of them in serious condition. The injured have been taken to hospitals throughout the city.
  • Cause: Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash that led to the explosion.
  • Response: Emergency services, including firefighters and paramedics, were dispatched to the scene. The resulting fire was brought under control, but cooling efforts were ongoing.
  • Impact: The explosion occurred on a major thoroughfare and created a large plume of smoke visible across the area. Videos shared on social media showed a mass of flames and people running from the scene. The roadway has been closed until further notice.

The gas tanker laying on its side had the logo of the energy business Silza on its side, but in a call with the Associated Press an official at the company who did not want to be identified company denied that it was their vehicle, saying they only operate in northern Mexico. The company did not immediately respond to an email requesting more details.

Brugada arrived to the scene of the explosion shortly after to accompany emergency teams, including firefighters and medics. Fire fighters were pouring water on the flames billowing from the gas tanker.

The explosion occurred on one of the most important roadways flowing out of the country’s capital on the way to the city of Puebla. The city’s government said the roadway would be closed until further notice.
